NOAH’S LAW IN MARYLAND/DRUNK DRIVING/INTERLOCK

On Behalf of | Nov 4, 2016 | Uncategorized |

Officer Noah Leotta was a Montgomery County, Maryland police officer who was hit and killed by a drunk driver.  As a result of this tragedy, a Maryland drunk driving law has been called Noah’s Law from its inception. The law was named after Noah Leotta.  It requires that all first-time driving under the influence (DUI) offenders who are stopped with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher install an ignition interlock as part of their penalties.

Prior to the approval of Noah’s Law, only first-time drunk drivers who have a BAC of 0.15 or higher to install an ignition interlock. This new requirement will save lives, and there’s data to prove it. A recent Washington Post article quoted Maryland state officials as saying the current ignition interlock program stopped 4,000 attempts to start a vehicle while over the legal limit of .08.

Although Noah’s Law is a victory for the state of Maryland, it’s also a personal victory for his supporters. His father walked with the bill every step of the way and was waiting in the House galley as the final vote was taken. He was quoted as saying that pushing the law through was a way channel his grief after losing his son, and not only will the law save others’ lives, it will save the family’s lives too.
